The Secretlab Magnus packs everything most people will want into a gaming desk, and it has the same high-quality construction as the company's Titan Evo gaming chairs. Outside of solid construction, the key features here are the use of a metal desktop that allows for all sorts of magnetic accessories to be used with the desk, including its magnetic cables clips.

The desk also features a sophisticated integrated cable management system, with a flip-up section at the back (that can be illuminated with a magnetic RGB strip) of the desk covering a large tray for cables. Power  can be sent to this section via an integrated power cable that runs up inside the height adjustable leg, reducing external cable clutter. You can also fit a network cable extension that fits to the outside of the leg, for similarly tidy cable results.

The desk also comes with a full-desk magnetic cover that has a faux leather finish. This makes for a slightly cushioned surface that can be used as a mousepad. Meanwhile, other accessories include a monitor riser, monitor arm, under-desk PC holder, magnetic headset holder, and laptop mount.

All this is combined into a desk that looks great, is built like a tank and is rated to an impressive 120kg using its remarkably smooth and quiet electronic height adjustment.

The main drawback to the Magnus Pro is its high price, with it starting at $849 (including Magpad desk mat). Nonetheless, it remains our top pick as it is the best gaming desk that money can buy and does offer reasonable value for the quality it provides.

Flexispot has firmly established itself as the go-to name in general purpose height adjustable gaming desks, with it offering a wide range of affordable yet capable desks. The E8 is its entry-level option but still delivers excellent value with sleek design, solid build quality, and just enough features to get the basics done.

With smooth motorized movements, a large horizontal and height range, and great build quality, the Flexispot E8 is an ideal solution for those looking for a simple standing desk for a PC setup to play games or work from home. The Corsair Platform:6 is a large and gaming desk that packs in lots of extra features and can be kitted out with a whole bunch more. It comes in three main options: a Standard fixed-height desk, an Elevate electronically height adjustable version, and a Creator Edition height adjustable version with a huge pegboard attachment.

All three include the very large, sturdy desk top that measures 6ft by 30 inches and integrates power sockets, cable storage, and double monitor arm on a gantry that runs along its back edge. This gantry can also be used to mount other hardware, such as microphone arms and streaming lights. Opt for the Creator Edition and a huge pegboard is added to the back that can be used to hang your spare gaming gear and other trinkets.

Whichever option you choose, you can later add the pegboard or side extensions to increase the desk area and pegboard space.

All this kit doesn't come cheap, with the desk starting at at $649 for the fixed height version and jumping straight to $909 for the height adjustable model. However, its build quality is rock solid and there's no doubting the sheer amount of kit you get with this desk. Just note that it is particularly big and only available in black with a black of walnut top, so you may want to consider the smaller Platform:4 that's available in black and white, starting from $799.99.

If you can accept the lame-looking pretend carbon fibre look of the desk top, this gaming desk offers a great combination of features for an amazingly low price. It includes a decent-sized 63 x 23.6-inch (14 x 60cm) top and sturdy metal-frame base that's rated to hold up to 320lbs (145kg).

Along with this and the obvious gamer styling additions – including the rather unwelcome extra plastic pieces at the rear corners of the desk – you get included cup and headset holders and two cable management holes in the top.

The desk is split in the middle – to make for a smaller shipping packing – so isn't as sturdy as some, but it's made from solid MDF laminate so is able to desk-clamping mounts for gear such as microphones, monitors, and lights. For just $79.99 you really can't fault the combination of features you get here, with assembly also being fairly easy.

The Flexispot EN1 (also known as the One Piece) is an electronic height-adjustable desk with a reasonable-size 48 x 24-inch (100 x 60cm) top available for just $169.99 / £149.99. For that incredibly low price, there are some compromises but this is still a sturdy and reliable if simple desk.

The main limitation here is the 145lbs (70kg) weight capacity, which is technically still plenty to lift even the bulkiest of gaming PCs but in practice is going to be best suited for slightly more modest setups. A not-too-crazy sized PC, a single monitor and not too many other extras will be a sensible use for this desk.

Otherwise, you get a simple, elegant design available with black or white legs and tops in black and white or various light and dark wood finishes. The height adjust controls even include programmable buttons for quick one-touch adjustment and the finishing touch is an included headset stand, though it is slightly awkwardly positioned on the side of the leg. I guess you can't have it all for this price.

If you're looking to build the ultimate gaming PC desk setup, the Lian Li DK-07X is the desk to get. Not only is it a height-adjustable desk packed with extra features and built like a tank but it even lets you build your PC right into the desk.

There's space inside for up to two whole gaming PCs based on up to E-ATX motherboards and with space for two power supplies, up to a 480mm radiator, and 17 fans! All that lot is then visible through the central, clear glass top of the desk.

To either side of the glass are aluminium top sections incorporated into which are, on one side, a wireless charging pad that pops up to reveal charging ports and, on the other side, the control for the electronic height adjust. Meanwhile, underneath these sections are drawers and on the front edge are more USB and audio ports, just like you get on the front of many PC cases.

All this lot of course doesn't come cheap, with it priced at $1,399.99, but you get an awful lot for you money and you save on having to buy a PC case too.
