This clever new tech could stop your Nvidia gaming GPU cable from melting

A new generation of Seasonic power supplies could have features to stop Nvidia GeForce graphics cards such as the RTX 5090 from melting.

With reports of melting Nvidia gaming GPU cables leaving gamers in distress, one manufacturer is looking to tackle the problem itself. Seasonic, the trusted power supply brand, has unveiled a new prototype at Computex 2025 that looks to add a series of failsafes to help protect your graphics card from destroying itself.

Despite attempts by melting RTX 5090 cables still surfacing. Various attempts have been made to combat the issue, including colored power plugs, but Seasonic has now stepped in with a very different solution to this problem.

Seasonic demonstrated its efforts to protect its products at the Computex 2025 trade show, where its prototype was available to view. The new power supply features, intended to Seasonic's next generation of Prime models in its best power supply lineup, incorporate sensors and a microcontroller to help keep a much tighter eye on temperature and current through the 12V-2×6 power connections.

According to a report on Tom's Hardware, these sensors will be placed close to the connectors so that, if the unit goes above its expected temperature or current limits, the PSU will turn itself off. PC builders will also be able to connect an external device for external notification if this occurs, although it isn't clear what kind of external device might be available for this purpose. For gamers, this could be the perfect way to save your PC – a power cut to prevent a meltdown.

There are some issues to work out (not least, the risk of data loss), but if it works as intended, Seasonic's new design could be a failsafe that protects your graphics card from burning out. Preventing the mistake, rather than dealing with the aftermath of a melted Nvidia power socket, is always going to be the best option for gaming PC builders.

This tech isn't yet available to buy yet, but Seasonic is expected to release its next-generation Prime PSUs, which will contain these new safeguards, next year.
