Payday 3 is preparing a comeback, as Starbreeze aims to launch updates faster

The creator of Payday 3, the co-op crime game competitor to Helldivers 2 and GTFO, has made a legal move that should help change the game.

Payday 3 hasn't been quite the success its maker and players might've hoped it would be. As the third entry to one of the most popular series of co-op games to date, expectations were high for the latest from creator Starbreeze Studios. Unfortunately, the FPS has struggled to meet those expectations, failing to grab attention from players content with multiplayer competitors like Helldivers 2, GTFO, or even Payday 2. While Starbreeze has continued to work on the game, issuing fairly regular updates, the latest move by the studio seems to be the most consequential to date: acquiring Payday 3's publishing rights.

saying the game came out in a state that "just felt unfinished," offering "a bad experience for our players."

However, Starbreeze will now have greater control over Payday 3. The studio "has entered into an agreement" with the shooter's original publisher Plaion "which will enable Starbreeze to fully acquire the publishing rights for Payday 3."

The upshot of this agreement is that it "will enable Starbreeze to accelerate content development and pursue broader business opportunities for the Payday franchise as a whole." Given the necessity of frequent updates to quickly iterate on the current game, the hope is that Starbreeze should now be in a much better position to address ongoing player complaints and finally get Payday 3 into the shape it and its audience have wanted for more than a year now.
