Half-Life remake team announces new co-op tactical FPS, with a twist

Crowbar Collective, the team behind Half-Life fan remake Black Mesa, has announced new tactical FPS game and roguelike hybrid Rogue Point.

The Half-Life fan remake is nothing short of incredible. With Black Mesa, the team at Crowbar Collective somehow managed to modernize Valve's epochal FPS in a way that felt earned, faithful, and new in equal measure. The hallowed halls of the research facility that swallow up Gordon Freeman have never looked so good, and I've been eagerly awaiting what the team decides to do next. With over 100,000 positive reviews for Black Mesa on Steam alone, I'd wager that you want to know what's next for Crowbar Collective as well. Today we finally find out. The studio has partnered with Team17 for Rogue Point, a tactical FPS and co-op roguelike hybrid.

The world's richest man, simply called 'The CEO,' is dead. In his wake, powerful conglomerates are trying to carve up what's left, and they'll use anything to get it. That means secretive hits on mouthy rivals, mercenary armies at the rich's beck and call, and a whole lot of chaos. In Rogue Point, this is where you come in.

As a group of up to four highly trained tactical operatives, you and your pals blast your way through diverse and ever-changing campaign missions. In old-school Rainbow Six fashion, you need to gather intelligence, plan your attack, and adapt to whatever the FPS game has in store for you. Tactics come first, but Crowbar Collective has thrown a spanner in the works.

Rogue Point is also a roguelike, and this means you can evolve your operator's skills alongside a "dynamic rogue-lite structure," where no two missions or loadouts are the same. You can take a spate of weapons, cosmetics, and campaign modifiers into each level, where your team's tactics will be vital in your preparation.

Rogue Point project lead Adam Engles says Crowbar Collective "cannot wait to go in-depth about the game, and everything we learned while creating a new IP (as well as turning Crowbar Collective into a full-time development studio)," adding that the team wants "to heavily involve the community in our development and updates" going forward.

Crowbar Collective isn't the only studio leveraging the success of a fan project to make something new, either. Fallout London developer Team FOLON is "hopefully" turning into a fully-fledged indie studio, with donations from throughout the FO4 mod's development being used to create something entirely original.
