Terraria 1.4.5 update adds a useful new transformation and a concerning snack

As the Terraria 1.4.5 update gets closer, developer Re-Logic shows off a slightly horrifying new snack in its new State of the Game blog.

The Terraria 1.4.5 update feels both tantalizingly close and impossibly distant. Developer Re-Logic has maintained its philosophy of only putting out updates when they're ready, and it's been a strategy that has long maintained Terraria's reputation as one of the best PC games. In a new Terraria State of the Game blog for the end of January 2025, head of business strategy Ted 'Loki' Murphy gives us our regularly scheduled update on how things are progressing. While there's no release date yet, we do get a glimpse of another potentially very powerful transformation, along with a cute but disturbing snack.

As part of the new update, Re-Logic reveals another transformation – the fairy. The demonstration we get to see shows a player at ground level becoming a tiny, winged ball of light. This lets them fly high enough that they're able to make it up to one of Terraria's sky islands. It's unclear whether this is available immediately with the new form, or if it will be affected by modifiers such as your current wing power, but such a huge amount of vertical mobility could make exploration a lot smoother if you can snatch it early enough.

We also see a second addition, and I'm not sure if it's cute or horrifying. Gem bunnies, which can be found underground in proximity to gem trees, can now be turned into the aptly named 'rock candy' item and eaten. That's made me think far more about their crystalline biology than I ever have before, and I'm not sure I'm comfortable with it. Still, crunching down on some sparkling goodness might just save you during a frantic dungeon delve.

Sadly, there's no word on exactly when 1.4.5 will arrive. Murphy notes that the team is "hard at work adding a few new bits, tweaking and balancing what we have, and fixing the usual bugs." He adds "we still plan to have an ideation session to be sure there is nothing that we have left on the side that shouldn't be there – and that meeting should lock in what there is left to do." Don't hold your breath quite yet, then.
