As excited as I am for the Terraria 1.4.5 update to finally release, there's a whole lot of big games on the go right now. Between Expedition 33, Oblivion Remastered, Blue Prince, Tempest Rising, and FF14 Cosmic Exploration, I can afford to let Re-Logic cook its (supposedly) final update for a little longer. Fortunately, it seems they've been busy doing just that. In a new Terraria State of the Game for April 2025, the developer reveals one of the most exciting additions we've seen so far, as it finally looks to give summoners the love they deserve.
To address the elephant in the room, the latest post from head of business strategy Ted 'Loki' Murphy doesn't have a sandbox game has been a long time coming, and says, "We are doing all that we can to not only get this one done, but also to plan a bit ahead to streamline things down the road – but that's a story for another time."

For now, at least, there's some very good news. Summoners have always been one of the most appealing builds in Terraria – while most players will bring a couple of minions along with them, actually going all-in on a loadout designed to surround you with a swarm of bees, bats, or increasingly more fantastical friends is a popular power fantasy. What's better than getting on with the important business of mining and gathering loot while your companions clear out the area for you?
Unfortunately, summons have always felt a little lackluster compared to rival builds; "We know that many players have felt that summoner lags behind the other classes in regards to equipment and other aspects," Murphy acknowledges. While they are getting a new whip in 1.4.5, one of the biggest missing pieces is that there are no weapon prefixes that provide specific buffs for summoner weapons. Now, after all these years, that's about to change.
In Terraria 1.4.5, take your summon staff to the Goblin Tinkerer and it can now gain buffs such as worthy, rabid, focused, loyal, ballistic, or even fabled. Based on the preview, the last of these looks to be the ultimate roll, equivalent to the likes of legendary, unreal, and mythical. Of course, there are also the typical range of negative modifiers in there as well, so you'll have to consider how much spare change you have before you start gambling.
There's one more tease in here too – the dungeon entrance, a mainstay of the Terraria map and an essential part of progression, has been given a facelift. It's certainly a big upgrade, as you can see below, and the team teases that this new look is just one of a couple of variations we can look forward to, adding, "Don't worry, the classic entrance to the dungeon is still in the game."
It's certainly imposing; I'm already planning how best to lay things out to tackle Skeletron when Terraria 1.4.5 finally arrives. Perhaps I'll even bring a minion army with me this time.
